Work packages > Work package 3

Start date or starting event: Month 1
Work package title: Assessment and improvement of heterologous protection by FMD vaccines
Activity Type: RTD
Work Package Leader: FLI
Participants: CODA-VAR, IAH, FLI, IIL, FUNPRECIT, UGLA, Merial

Objectives
This work package aims to improve our understanding of and ability to predict the protection afforded by FMDV vaccines against challenge in cattle by heterologous strains of virus (priority serotypes O and A) by:

  • 1. Gathering data on the protection by existing and new monovalent vaccines against newly emerging strains (e.g. recent type A strains circulating in the Middle East and the O PanAsiaII strain)
  • 2. Investigating whether multivalent vaccines containing several antigens of one serotype offer advantages over existing monovalent vaccines in terms of broader coverage within the same serotype as the vaccine strains (using serological methods such as EPP and in vivo challenge experiments)
Improving in vitro VNT and LPBE r-value determination through standardisation and harmonisation.

Description of work

  • Task 1. Assessment of heterologous protection by highly potent, monovalent FMD vaccines
    •     2.1. Cross-protection studies between strains of serotype O using monovalent serotype O vaccines
    •     2.2. Cross-protection studies between strains of serotype A using monovalent serotype A vaccines
  • Task 2. Assessment of heterologous protection by multivalent FMD vaccines against strains of the same serotype
    •     2.1. Heterologous protection induced by bivalent serotype A vaccines against field isolates within serotype A
    •     2.2. Heterologous protection induced by monovalent and bivalent serotype A vaccines against field isolates within serotype A
  • Task 3. Improvement of r-value determination
