Welcome to FMD-DISCONVAC

Development, enhancement and complementation of animal-sparing, foot-and-mouth disease vaccine-based control strategies for free and endemic regions

FMD-DISCONVAC at a glance:

FMD-DISCONVAC is a small collaborative project, type SICA, funded by the European Commission within the 7th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development and addresses to the Cooperation Programme, Theme 2 Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, and Biotechnology, activity 2.1 Sustainable production and management of biological resources from land, forest and aquatic environments, activity code KBBE-2008-1-3-02 Foot-and-mouth disease: improve and/or develop vaccine, vaccination strategies and diagnostics assays for free and endemic settings - SICA. The project has started on the 1st of April 2009 and will last 39 months.
By building on existing knowledge gained in the FP6 FMD-ImproCon project, the Consortium aims to improve the quality of existing FMD vaccines and diagnostics, refine and replace in vivo vaccine quality tests, develop new generation FMD vaccines and diagnostics, and increase the knowledge on FMDV spread and transmission.
Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is one of the world's most important infectious diseases of livestock. The FMD virus (FMDV) is a classic example of a highly contagious RNA virus that affects multiple species of cloven-hoofed animals and has an extremely high mutation rate. FMDV is an Aphthovirus within the family of Picornaviridae. To date, seven different serotypes have been identified (O, A, C, Asia 1, SAT1, SAT2 and SAT3) and new subtypes arise frequently. FMDV is globally ranked by veterinary authorities as the first and foremost priority. Moreover, FMD has been identified as one of the priority animal diseases, both within the European Commission's Animal Health Strategy "Prevention is better than Cure" (2007-2013) and the European Technology Platform for Global Animal Health (ETPGAH).
